The Yellow Wallpaper

A short story using expressive typography.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story The Yellow Wallpaper is, in a summary, about a woman who is suffering from post-partum depression and depression in general. She becomes sort of locked away in a bedroom with this awful yellow wallpaper, but she becomes obsessed with it and starts seeing figures moving on it. This part of the story shows her slowly becoming psychotic from her depression.

Throughout the spreads I wanted to show that deterioration of mental health by slowly making the bright yellow more of a grungy dark yellow. I also mimicked that idea on the front cover. On most pages I picked phrases I thought would be interesting to illustrate using type, weights, and color.
